1. Feed and finish

Soccer shooting drill: a feeder passes to a striker who shoots first time into the goal

The foundation of finishing. A feeder stands 8–10 yards out and plays the ball into a striker on the edge of the box, who takes one touch (or shoots first time) and finishes.

  • Setup: goal, 1 feeder, 1 striker, a supply of balls.
  • Coaching points: plant foot beside the ball, strike through the middle with the laces, keep it low and toward the corner.
  • Reps: 8–10 shots, then rotate.

2. Shooting from the cutback

Soccer cutback shooting drill: a winger reaches the byline and cuts the ball back to a striker arriving at the penalty spot to finish

A huge share of goals come from cutbacks. A wide player dribbles to the byline and pulls the ball back to a striker arriving at the penalty spot.

  • Setup: goal, a wide server, a striker timing a run into the box.
  • Coaching points: strike the moving ball first time, get the shot down, attack the ball — don't wait for it.
  • Why it works: it rehearses one of the most common real goal-scoring patterns.

3. 1v1 with the goalkeeper

Soccer one-on-one finishing drill: a striker dribbles at goal and finishes past the onrushing goalkeeper

A striker runs onto a through ball and finishes 1v1 against the goalkeeper.

  • Setup: GK in goal, striker starting 25–30 yards out, served a ball to run onto.
  • Coaching points: decide early — go around the keeper or finish into the open corner. Stay composed and don't rush.

4. Rapid fire

Place 3–4 balls in an arc around the box. The striker finishes one, recovers, and strikes the next as quickly as possible. Builds quick feet, balance, and repeatable technique under fatigue.

5. Volleys and half-volleys

A server tosses or chips the ball for the striker to volley or half-volley on goal. Teaches timing and a clean strike on a dropping ball — keep the knee over the ball to keep it down.

6. Long shots

From 20–25 yards, players strike at a target in the goal. Work on a still body, a long follow-through, and hitting the ball with the laces for power and dip.

7. Finishing under pressure

Add a recovering defender chasing the striker from behind, or a time limit, so finishing has to happen fast and composed — the way it does in a match. Pair it with defending drills to train both sides at once.

Coaching tips for shooting drills

  • Technique before power — accuracy and a clean contact score more than blasting it.
  • Finish to the corners — aim just inside the post, away from the keeper.
  • High reps, quick rotation — keep the supply of balls flowing so strikers get many shots.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best soccer shooting drills?

The most effective shooting drills are feed-and-finish (basic technique), cutback finishing, and 1v1s with the goalkeeper. They cover the three most common ways goals are actually scored, so they transfer directly to match situations.

How can I improve my shooting in soccer?

Master the fundamentals first: plant your non-kicking foot beside the ball, strike through the middle with your laces, keep your head steady and over the ball, and aim for the corners. Then add repetition and game-speed pressure with the drills above.

How do you shoot a soccer ball with power?

For power, take a slightly longer approach, plant firmly beside the ball, strike through its center with the top of your laces (toe pointed down), and follow through fully toward the target. Power comes from clean contact and a full follow-through, not from swinging harder.

What is the best shooting drill for kids?

Simple feed-and-finish from close range is best for young players — it builds confidence and a repeatable technique. Make it a game (score points for hitting the corners) and keep the shots coming quickly so every child gets lots of attempts.
