How the NFL playoff predictor works

Every game already played counts with its real result. For each game still to come, you pick the winner (or a tie). After every pick the predictor recalculates each team's record, the eight division races and the 14 playoff seeds.

Seven teams per conference make the playoffs. The four division winners are seeded 1 to 4 by record, and the three best remaining teams are the wild cards at 5, 6 and 7. Only the number 1 seed gets a bye.

When teams finish level, the predictor applies the NFL's official tie-breaking procedures in order: head-to-head, division record, record against common opponents, conference record, strength of victory, strength of schedule and the points-based steps. The step that decided a seed is shown next to it.

We checked the tiebreaker engine against every season since 2002: from the real regular-season results it reproduces the actual playoff field and every wild card matchup, all 24 seasons, including more than 90 seeds that were decided by tiebreakers.

NFL playoff predictor FAQ

How does the NFL playoff predictor work?▼

Real results are filled in for every game already played. You pick the remaining games, and the predictor works out the final standings and all 14 playoff seeds with the NFL's official tiebreakers, updating after every pick.

Does it use the official NFL tiebreakers?▼

Yes. Division ties go through head-to-head, division record, common opponents, conference record, strength of victory and strength of schedule, and wild card ties use the wild card procedure, including the three-team rules. Two final steps that almost never come into play are simplified: net touchdowns is skipped, and a coin toss is replaced by alphabetical order.

How accurate is it?▼

We tested it on every NFL season from 2002 to 2025. Given the real regular-season results, it reproduces the actual playoff field and every wild card matchup in all 24 seasons.

How often are the results updated?▼

Results are refreshed every hour, so a game shows as final soon after it ends. Picks you made for a game that has since been played are replaced by the real result.

Are my picks saved?▼

Yes, in your browser, so you can come back and keep going. Use Clear all to start again.

How many teams make the NFL playoffs?▼

Fourteen, seven from the AFC and seven from the NFC: four division winners and three wild cards in each conference. The number 1 seed gets a bye; seeds 2 to 7 play on wild card weekend.

Can a division winner have a worse record than a wild card?▼

Yes. Division winners always take seeds 1 to 4, so a 9-8 division winner is seeded ahead of a 12-5 wild card and hosts a playoff game.

Is the NFL playoff predictor free?▼

Yes, completely free with no signup.
