The midfield at a glance
A classic midfield three has one player in each band — a holder (6), a runner (8), and a creator (10) — but the shape changes with the formation. Whatever the setup, midfielders share the most ground of any players on the pitch.
Defensive midfielder (CDM) — number 6
The defensive midfielder, or "pivot," sits just in front of the back four.
- Job: shield the defense, break up opposition attacks, win second balls, and start attacks with the first pass out. The team's defensive anchor.
- Attributes: positional discipline, tackling and interceptions, composure, and an excellent passing range.

Central midfielder (CM) — number 8
The central midfielder is the box-to-box engine, covering the whole length of the pitch.
- Job: link defense and attack, support both phases, and arrive late in the box to score. The all-rounder of the team.
- Attributes: stamina above all, plus passing, ball-carrying, and the timing to join attacks.

Attacking midfielder (CAM) — number 10
The attacking midfielder, or playmaker, plays in the pocket between the opposition's midfield and defense.
- Job: create chances, thread through-balls, and link the midfield to the strikers. The creative hub — the classic "number 10."
- Attributes: vision, technique, quick combination play, and an eye for the killer pass. Sits at the heart of a 4-2-3-1.
- Examples of the type: Mesut Özil, Kevin De Bruyne, Zinedine Zidane.
Wide midfielders
In a 4-4-2 or 4-5-1, the midfield also includes wide midfielders on the right and left. They provide width, track back to help the full-backs, and deliver crosses — a more defensive cousin of the winger.
