How the Champions League knockout phase works

The top eight of the 36-team league phase go straight into the round of 16. Teams finishing 9th to 24th meet in the knockout play-offs, with 9–16 seeded and 17–24 unseeded; 25th to 36th are eliminated.

Every tie before the final is played over two legs, with the seeded side at home in the second. The bracket is split into four sections, so a club's possible path to the final is fixed from the moment the league phase ends — only the exact pairings inside each section are drawn.
