How the Champions League league phase works

Since 2024/25 the Champions League uses a single 36-team league instead of eight groups. Every club plays eight matches against eight different opponents drawn from four seeding pots, with results feeding one combined table.

The top eight teams qualify directly for the round of 16. Teams finishing 9th to 24th contest a two-legged knockout play-off for the remaining last-16 places, while the bottom 12 are eliminated from Europe entirely.

Champions League draw — FAQ

When is the 2026/27 Champions League draw?

The league-phase draw takes place on Thursday 27 August 2026, after the qualifying play-off round. The league phase itself begins in mid-September 2026.

How does the Swiss-model draw work?

All 36 teams sit in one league. Each team is drawn two opponents from each of the four pots — eight games in total, four at home and four away. No team can play a side from its own association, and can face at most two clubs from any single other country.

Are these the real 2026/27 teams?

Yes — all 36 are final. The 29 automatic qualifiers came through their 2025/26 domestic finish, and the seven play-off winners are AEK Athens, LASK, Viking, Slovan Bratislava, Sabah, Bodø/Glimt and Fenerbahçe. The pots follow UEFA's provisional coefficient seeding and are confirmed at the draw on 27 August 2026.

How many teams qualify for the round of 16?

The top eight in the 36-team table qualify automatically. Teams placed 9th to 24th enter a knockout play-off round, and the bottom 12 are eliminated.
